I had the great pleasure of getting to study voice with one of my hero’s Nicolai Gedda. He was an inspirational man who ranks right up there with the greatest tenors ever to live. My disbelief was hearing him work on this next aria with me. He seemed to have such mastery of his voice that he could shape the sound any way he pleased. On my first visit to see him, my teacher Peter Alexander Wilson came with me to Morges in Switzerland and we spent a week absorbing his every word on singing.
I recorded this as a tribute to him with an aria from a little known opera called Le Roi D’ys by Eduard Lalo. This aria is called ‘Vainement, ma bien-aimée’.
