Message for our young people

Hi Folks,

I hope everyone is doing well? Please stay in touch and let us know. I wrote this message for our young people in light of covid-19 related school closures, but I guess it might apply to us all in different ways. Please share as you see fit-

‘I wanted to reiterate a few things that are probably very obvious to you all now. I am hugely disappointed for you all that your school year has come to an end. I know many of you had exams to take this year, and much work had been put into your studies. This work has and will never be in vain. Our ability to educate and learn is one of the greatest gifts we have. I only discovered after I left school (which I loved) that I really enjoyed subjects that I didn’t necessarily enjoy at school like politics, history, economy etc..

This is why we must keep our minds open, clear and focused at this unsettling time. The word resilient is a word which gets bandied around a lot, and not to over complicate, literally means the ‘ability to bounce back.’ You will all bounce back from having your studies suspended if you continue to create, imagine, study, learn, and be inquisitive. Discipline is a great defence in your shield of armoury so please set yourselves a task list everyday and set about your social isolation with purpose and intent.

Please keep your family and friends at the forefront of your mind and make a conscious decision to reach out especially with a phone call or video call to make sure people are keeping their spirits up. It goes without saying that the most important thing though is for you to take all measures you can to socially isolate and not congregate in groups for the next while. We don’t know how long this will last, but over the next few weeks this is a recognised way of actually saving lives. Please don’t have any regrets on this point. Our friends are important but staying away from each other for a while to protect family members is an easy choice to make.

Be positive, be smart, be brave and be compassionate for each other. ‘We’ as a society will make the difference, but you and I can play our part in the meantime.’

Take care and virtual hugs to you all,
Daryl ?
